Last night was a productive evening! I sat down with my travel buddy and started really working out the fundamentals of this trip to Darwin. We’ve finally been convinced that Australia is big and as a result out trip has been extended from our original 4 weeks to 4 months.
As we had a lot more time on the road, we changed some of our travel plans and recalculated our costs.
Here’s a comparison of the new and old routes:
The aim is to leave Canberra on the 1st of July and return at the beginning of November.
If there’s one part that I’m really excited about, it’s hitting up the telegraph track in the Cape and reaching the top most end of Australia.
One thing I really want to leverage for the planning of this trip is the power of the internet. Social Networking has become such a huge part of our day to day lives. Things like Twitter and FaceBook are a great way to interact with people to gain insight and information. I’m hoping that I might be able to use them to help plan parts of this trip.
So! here we are, a very sketchy map of where we’re currently planning to go.
The idea is to detour a fair bit off the beaten track to find some swimming holes and places to fish and camp (Suggestions would be great!). If you know of anyone that’s toured around australia and that have travelled around these areas, I would love to hear anything they have to share. I also need some convincing to cross the border into WA. Is there anything worth seeing on the NT/WA or SA/WA border?
Not sure what’s going to come up next in this travel journal. Perhaps some more on the motivation, reason and ideas for the trip.
I’ve been talking about heading to Darwin for a while now but it’s been all talk and no action. That’s finally changing and the plans are starting to roll along. A mate and I are heading out together on a 14,000km trip across Australia.
There’s a heap of things that need to be organised for what is planned to be around 5 weeks on the road. I’m hoping to use this blog to keep you all updated on the planning and (when we leave) the progress of the trip.
For all those who are interested in touring Australia and want to know the car details, here’s the goods. I have a Nissan Patrol 1990 4.2 Diesel. It’s all stock standard and has no after market changes, that’s about to change over the next few months.
Winch Bull Bar (I think it’s Factory Fitted)
Uniden 40 Channel UHF
Light-weight Roof Rack
Some of the planned Modifications
2″ Lift Kit
RTC Steering Dampener
Heavy Duty Roof Rack
31″ Tyres (Looking at Coopers ST-C’s or BFG M/T)
Dual Battery kit
2 x 240 XGT Lightforce Lights
Long Range Fuel Tank
Well, that’s all for this update. Next, I’ll post a rough map of the route we’re planning to take. I would love to hear recommendations of places to visit en-route so subscribe to updates though RSS/Facebook/Twitter or visit back in a few days to see our draft map.
